The number of sexual assaults reported to police rose for the 12th year in a row, raising the rate of surviving victims to a level never seen in Australia before.

New data released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed the number of sexual assaults increased by 11 per cent last year.

This increased the number of surviving victims to 36,318 – 3,547 more than in 2022 – and the victimization rate from 126 to 136 people per 100,000.

“There were 36,318 survivors of sexual violence recorded by the police in 2023, with an increase in almost all states and territories,” said ABS head of crime and justice statistics Samantha McNally.

“Accounting for population growth, the rate of registered survivors of sexual violence rose from 126 per 100,000 last year to 136 survivors per 100,000.

“This is the highest rate of sexual assault survivors recorded in our data set in 31 years.”

According to the data, 84 percent of surviving victims were female, while the age group that made up the highest proportion of victims was 10 to 17-year-olds at 41 percent.

The majority of sexual assaults (94 percent) did not involve a weapon, while just under 70 percent were committed in the home.

Two in five sexual assaults were related to family and domestic violence, the ABS said.

The ABS figures also include trends in other forms of crime, including murder-related offences, which rose by five per cent last year – although the level of victimization remained stable.

Homicide offenses include murder, attempted murder, manslaughter and driving causing death.

Of these murders, 38 percent were related to domestic violence
