Aussie coach Andrew McDonald fields with George Bailey and Brad Hodge in T20 World Cup warm-up game

Josh Hazlewood and David Warner were dominant as Australia called on reinforcements, including coach Andrew McDonald, in a comfortable T20 World Cup warm-up defeat to Namibia.

Australia named just nine players for the clash in Trinidad, with six members of the squad given some rest after IPL campaigns.

It led to incredible scenes as the Test and ODI world champions began preparations for another trophy by fielding four members of their support staff, all over the age of 40, in the unofficial match.

“The T20 World Cup in Australia is about to get off to a strange start,” Cricket Australia’s Louis Cameron said.

“Their IX (not a typo) is first in the warm-up game against Namibia in Trinidad. George Bailey and Andre Borovets will complete the numbers on the field.”

At one stage, chief selector and former Australian batsman George Bailey, coach and former Test all-rounder Andrew McDonald, batting coach and former Test player Brad Hodge and fielding coach and former first-class wicketkeeper Andre Borovec were on the field.

Borovec and Hodge, who turns 50 in December, continued to catch and McDonald won plaudits for diving into the outfield as Australia restricted world number 14 Namibia to 8-120 at Queen’s Park Oval.

Hazlewood (2-5 from four overs) set the tone in his first match in nearly three months, quickly boasting 2-0 from his first three overs to leave Namibia 6-50.

They recovered but Warner, eyeing his final international, ensured an early night with an unbeaten 21-ball 54.

Tim David (23 off 16) hit three fours and a six while Adam Zampa took 3-25.

Australia will again be without players for their second and final warm-up match against the West Indies on Thursday.

Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green will all join the squad ahead of next Thursday’s tournament opener against Oman in Barbados.
