A man has been arrested by counter-terrorism officers after a “number of suspicious substances” were found at a property in Bedfordshire.

The 31-year-old from Bedfordshire was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of possessing items for terrorist purposes and remains in custody, the Metropolitan Police said.

He was previously arrested on May 6 by Bedfordshire Police on suspicion of causing explosions likely to endanger life and possession of class A drugs, but was released on bail before being arrested again.

On Tuesday, the force said an ordnance disposal team carried out a “controlled explosion” at the site in Hyde Road, Caddington, last week.

The investigation was taken over by the Met’s counter-terrorism command on Monday after extensive searches at the residential address, the Met said.

The force added that specialist officers are continuing to search the address and have found a number of items and substances which have been processed and removed safely.

There is not considered to be a risk to local people or the general public.

The Met added that it was working closely with Bedfordshire Police and the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit as the investigation continued.
