Coles announces surprising makeover to its range of mandarins

A Coles A spokesman confirmed a major change to the popular fruit in hundreds of stores across Australia.
The supermarket giant will no longer sell its Unique Selection tangerines in plastic mesh bags and has instead launched packs of its staple lunch boxes in 100 recyclable paper bags per consignment.
The new packaging solution will reduce 11,700kg worth of plastic in a year and can be recycled to the kerb.

With more than one million of the paper bags expected to be sold between April and October this year, Coles Fresh Produce general manager Charlotte Gilbert said the packaging update was an exciting sustainability move.
“We know how much our customers love tangerines at this time of year, so we’re delighted to be able to offer them in a new paper bag that can be placed in your recycling bin after you’ve had a chance to enjoy them, ” she said.
“Customers can still buy their favorite mandarin in bulk, including the delicious Imperial and Afourer varieties, with more than 16 million tonnes of the citrus expected to be sold in Coles stores this season.”
Planet Ark chief executive Rebecca Gilling praised Coles for providing a recyclable alternative to plastic mesh bags.
“It’s very positive to see Coles design packaging to avoid plastic waste and provide Australians with a recyclable alternative to the plastic mesh bag,” she said.
“While we support buying bulk bags and reusing them where possible, we applaud Coles for its work to close the recycling loop and provide customers with products that can be easily recycled.”
The new 800g mandarin packs are available in all states and territories – except Western Australia – and start at $5.50.
