A wise man Coles customer sent social media into a tailspin by revealing a little-known hack to mute the self-checkout voice at the registers.
Sharing on Reddit, the eagle-eyed shopper explained that anyone can mute the “condescending” voice with the simple touch of a button.
The Reddit user shared the tip during a wide-ranging discussion about anti-theft measures at Coles and Woolworths.

“That voice coming from the computer is nagging. I’m muting it now,” they wrote.
The comment immediately piqued the interest of some wanting to know how it’s done.
“Wait, can you turn it down? How do you do this miracle?” – answered one.
Another said: “Can you do that? I never looked into whether that was an option.”
The shopper went on to say that many Coles self-service registers have a volume button.
“At the bottom of the screen is a speaker-like button,” they explained. “I pat him.
“I happened to notice it and tried it.”
“Man I hate that voice!”
Speaking about the self-service checkout voice, they added: “It does have a certain ‘condescending’ tone.”
Many were moved by the simple advice.
