Tom and Sam De Koning have played against each other on several occasions, but have rarely gone head-to-head, with Sam usually taking on his usual defensive role.

But it was just like the backyard again Friday night as they stared each other down from the game’s first rebound.

It was barely more than a minute before older brother Tom asserted his dominance of the race.

Carlton’s dynamic ruck pushed his brother out of his way on a forward-50 stoppage to grab the ball from the ruck and score a brilliant goal.

“Tommy De Koning — quality. He just keeps getting better and better,” James Brayshaw said in a comment.

Luke Hodge added: “It was just Tom’s mind.

“Sam was obviously too worried about his brother. But then the Carlton boys, the Crips, got to Sam.

“However, imagine the parents; brother against brother in the middle, the emotions after the goal.”

The cameras quickly caught the De Koning family watching from the stands, who were clearly torn, not knowing whether to cheer for Tom or sympathize with Sam.

Sam later put one back on his brother after Tom made a free throw in the third quarter.

Tom cleared Sam when he flew out for a point which was deemed unrealistic by the referee who blew the whistle to give Geelong Utility a goal kick inside 50.

The brothers’ mother once again became the focus of the broadcast, blowing a kiss to her two sons from the stands.
