Key events
24th over: England 142-3 (Sciver-Brunt 34, Wyatt 44) Nida Dar changed the end to replace Riaz but England really chased her today. Sciver-Brunt runs down the track to drive beautifully back over the fielder’s head for four.
Dar bowled three one-over spells that cost ten, nine and now eight runs. If she keeps this up, it’s going to be one hell of a magic ending.
24th over: England 134-3 (Sciver-Brunt 28, Wyatt 42) Pakistan need a wicket so Fatima Sana hits back. Wyatt reminds us that he is both a scalpel and a hammer by sliding down the boundary to third, but he can do nothing with a perfect outswinger that beats the outside edge. Wyatt nearly overturned, which would have been fatal with wicketkeeper Najiha Alvi at the stumps.
23rd over: England 129-3 (Saiver-Brunt 28, Wyatt 37) Double bowling change for Pakistan with medium pacer Alia Riaz coming in. It starts with a long bounce that goes to deep midwicket for four from Wyatt, and a nervy first over – including two wides – goes for nine.
Sciver-Brunt and Wyatt added 59 off exactly one ball. It was a lesson in scoring quickly in the middle overs while minimizing risk.
22nd over: England 120-3 (Saiver-Brunt 27, Wyatt 31) Nida Dar, back on the attack, starts with a flying half-volley that is headed to the cover boundary by Wyatt.
Sciver-Brunt survives a check after stealing another single, then sweeps a couple to go past 3,500 ODI runs. Never mind pitch, look at average (46) and strikeout rate (96).
21st over: England 111-3 (Saiver-Brunt 24, Wyatt 25) The expert strike rotation continues, with five singles and two from Nashra’s fifth over. Both batsmen come close to one ball but have hardly played a big shot.
20th over: England 104-3 (Sciver-Brunt 22, Wyatt 20) A potentially narrow over from Umm-e-Hani is marred when Wyatt cleverly guides the last ball to the third boundary for three runs. These two seem to be on good terms.
19th over: England 99-3 (Saiver-Brunt 21, Wyatt 16) Nashra has a couple of encouraging LBW appeals dismissed against Sciver-Brunt, who was a long way down the track on both occasions. Nice bowling though and just two runs from the over.
18th over: England 97-3 (Saiver-Brunt 21, Wyatt 15) Wyatt got lucky when a Umm-e-Hani uppercut just cleared short fine leg.
A couple of big shots aside, this pair have been very good in the stroke rotation and have five singles from the over. Sciver-Brunt has 21 off 19 balls, Wyatt 15 off 17.
17th over: England 92-3 (Sciver-Brunt 18, Wyatt 13) Wyatt danced down the field to fire Nashra over the middle of the attack six. It’s a great knock, the best of England’s innings so far.
16th over: England 83-3 (Sciver-Brunt 17, Wyatt 5) Wyatt survives a stumping referral after failing to clear Umm-e-Hani, who bowls well.
15th over: England 78-3 (Sciver-Brunt 13, Wyatt 4)
14th over: England 75-3 (Sciver-Brunt 11, Wyatt 3) There is no sign of England coming into their shell despite losing three early wickets. They are hitting deep today, with Alice Capsey seeded at No.7, and we know they want to keep attacking no matter what.
VARITKA! England 70-3 (Knight LBW b Um-e-Khani 12)
It’s closer than close: it’s out! The ball spun past the inside edge and hit Knight on the back pad in front and mid on. Knight’s bat got stuck behind the pad, leaving her unable to access the ball.
Review of Pakistan for LBW against Knight! She pokes a good delivery from Umm-e-Hani and that looks very close.
13th over: England 70-2 (Knight 12, Sciver-Brunt 10) Baig (6-1-21-1) was replaced by left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu, whose second ball was driven past midwicket for four by Siver-Brunt. This is a great shot, a flawless display of her footwork, placement and strength.
12th over: England 63-2 (Knight 10, Sciver-Brunt 5) Fatima Sana is replaced by offspinner Umm-e-Hani, who is edged past the wicketkeeper for four by Siver-Brunt. I was going to say this could be a pretty quiet spell while Knight and Skyver-Brunt try to figure out what a decent score is. One more wicket would have made England worried, even with a deep line-up.
11th over: England 56-2 (Knight 8, Sciver-Brunt 0) That was the last ball of the over.
VARITKA! England 56-2 (Bouchier c Fatima b Baig 34)
Diana Baig continues in her sixth over, a risk that pays off when Bouchier takes a catch to extra cover. Baig deserves this wicket for a really good opening spell; Bouchier’s timing was off but she bowled positively, hitting six fours in a 33-ball 34.
10th over: England 53-1 (Bouchier 34, Knight 5) England have conceded a lot of shots, which suggests that this pitch can be deceptively uncomfortable. That said, Pakistan bowled really well in the Powerplay, with a largely great line-up.
Bouchier continues to play his shots, pushing Fatima over mid-off for four. For a split second it looked like it might be a chance, but she got enough. Another boundary off the last ball, pulled up at mid-off, takes Bouchier to 34 off 31 balls.
9th over: England 45-1 (Bouchier 26, Knight 5) Dropped her! Bouchier bowls a wide ball from Baig to extra cover, where Fatima fires an awkward two-handed chance to the left.
Pakistan continue to make life uncomfortable for England’s batsmen. Knight gets a lead that is slightly less than Baig in her follow-through.
8th over: England 44-1 (Bouchier 25, Knight 5) Fatima nearly gets two for two when Heather Knight drives her first ball just short of leg stump for four. Bouchier then makes a very full delivery, just short of a slip.
Despite these moments of luck, and partly because of them, England scored 25 off the last two overs,
VARITKA! England 35-1 (Beaumont b Fatima 11)
You didn’t see layoffs like this in the 1990s. Tammy Beaumont tries to tilt Fatima Sana, misses and is thrown out. Replays show it was a really good performance that swung late on to embarrass Beaumont.
7th over: England 31-0 (Beemount 7, Bouchier 22) Maia Bouchier releases the pressure with three boundaries in five balls from Diana Bag: a clip past square leg, an emphatic shot through the covers and a classy lofted shot to left of mid-on. A beautiful, elegant wadding.
6th over: England 19-0 (Beemount 7, Bouchier 10) Another tight one from Fatima Sana, two from him. The five overs of a seam, or rather a swing, cost just nine runs.
5th over: England 17-0 (Beemount 7, Bouchier 9) Beaumont pushes forward against a magnificent off-swinger from Baig and survives a huge appeal as he is caught behind. My guess is that the bat hit the pad and after a long discussion Nida Dar decided not to be screened.
Replays confirm that the offending sound was indeed a bat on a pad. However, this is a great Baig girl who has figures of 3-1-5-0. England’s openers are finding life difficult against the swinging ball.
4th over: England 17-0 (Beemount 7, Bouchier 9) Dar wisely gives way to another bowler, Fatima Sana, who bowls Beaumont with her second delivery. Neither batter has yet found their touch; it was a low start to the game.
3rd over: England 15-0 (Beemount 6, Bouchier 9) Baig started well, with a tight line (mostly) and a soupcon of offswing, enough to make the batsmen wary. She concedes just one off her second over.
2nd over: England 14-0 (Beemount 5, Bouchier 9) Pakistan captain Nida Dar decided to open with her offspin but a costly first over went for 10. England scored all six deliveries with Bouchier cutting the last ball for the first boundary of the innings.
1st over: England 4-0 (Beemount 3, Bouchier 1) There is early swing for Baig whose first deliveries are played carefully by Beaumont. A bit of width allows Beaumont to go through covers for three, then Bouchier steers his first ball towards third for a single.
The reflection started just in timealthough Sky say they have limited coverage due to some technical issues. Diana Baig is about to open the bowling to Tammy Beaumont.
The local TV broadcast was supposed to start 20 minutes ago, but right now we’re looking at the highlights of the men’s T20 between India and England from 2007. I’m sure it will be sorted in time for the first ball. Please FFS please tell me it will be sorted in time for first ball.

England win the toss
Preamble
Look, there’s no easy way to say this, so here goes: I think we’re going to have some real cricket today. So far this week only 6.5 of a possible 140 overs have been bowled in the two series between England and Pakistan, but the forecast in Chelmsford is pretty good and we should have a full game today.
It’s a crucial series with a twist: England can’t lose as they lead 1-0, but a draw will feel like a defeat for them and a win for an improving Pakistan. confused? Don’t be. I just need the three numbers on the back of the card.
England were not entirely satisfied with their performance in the only completed match so far, a 37-run win at Derby. At least it was a team effort. Eight batsmen scored between 16 and 44 to reach a working total of 243 for nine; four bowlers took at least two wickets to close out the win. And the only bowler to remain wicketless, Sarah Glenn, had earlier run out a crucial 16 but was not out at No.9.
England are certainly aiming for more than that, but 37 runs certainly beats losing. And it sure beats another wash.
