Ex-Camelot boss Nigel Railton named as new Post Office chair | Post Office

The former chief executive of ex-national lottery operator Camelot has been appointed as the new interim chairman of the Post office.

The government announced on Wednesday that business secretary Cammy Badenoch had appointed Nigel Railton to the role, replacing Henry Staunton. who was fired in January.

The government said Railton was chosen for the role because of his experience in “transforming organisations”. He will monitor the company as it appears paid millions of pounds in compensation of the victims of the Horizon IT scandal, while managing the day-to-day disclosures from public inquiry into the scandal.

Between 1999 and 2015, more than 900 postal operators were wrongfully prosecuted because of flaws in the Horizon computer system developed by Japanese technology company Fujitsu.

Railton’s appointment was first reported by Sky News. The government said he would take up the role as soon as possible, after pre-appointment checks were completed.

The new chairman spent seven years as Camelot boss before stepping down in 2023. He also held roles at carmaker Daewoo and British Rail. He also chairs Argentex Group, a provider of currency management services.

His appointment comes after outgoing chairman Staunton was embroiled in a war of words with Badenoch after he claimed in an interview with the Sunday Times that he was they asked the government to stop compensation payments to victims of the Horizon scandal. Badenoch denied the accusation, describing the comments as a “disgraceful representation” of the conversation they have the.

Badenoch said: “Nigel has the necessary experience to lead an organization as large and complex as the Post Office and I am confident that he will work well with the management team to implement the change required across the organisation.”

Railton said: “The Post Office plays a vital role in communities across the country. It is a national institution and its success in the coming years matters to all.
