First Dream Home room reveals divide opinion as judges look for ‘wow factor’

It was time for the first revelations in the room on Sunday night’s episode Dream homewith Chris Brown as host, and six couples competed for the judges’ praise after being tasked with renovating rooms in Brad and Mel’s house.
Brad and Mel bought an old 3-bedroom home in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Northcote, but 17 years later it’s falling apart at the seams.

With four kids and a total of six people in the house, there’s stuff everywhere – and very little room to move around.
Things are so crowded that Brad and Mel had to move their bedroom into the old dining room, space is absolutely limited and things are starting to fall apart.
The couple couldn’t afford to do anything about it, and it got to the point where the kids were telling them they weren’t going to bring their friends back into the house.
Brad and Mel handed their home over to six complete strangers to carry out the renovations, with Queensland couple Hannah and Jonny creating the first rooms to come under the judges’ microscope.
The living room they were working on was literally mired in mud for days while other stresses continued to pile up, including the central fireplace that arrived just two days before the room’s unveiling.
“If we lose one more bit of control, we won’t even have a finished room,” Johnny said.
So what can the judges expect when they go to the Northcote home to judge the work?
What lies within has been completely transformed from a crowded, worn-out space into a spacious, light-filled room that’s both elegant and family-friendly.
In a word? Eha.
“Without it being the same address, I wouldn’t believe it was the same home,” said judge Lana Taylor of Three Birds Renovations.
“We were looking at cesspools a split second ago,” added interior designer Rosie Morley.
“That’s pretty amazing.”
“Remembering this is a house of six,” added the buyer’s agent Simon Cohen.
“There should be that livability.”
Everyone agreed the sofa was a fantastic choice for a large family, but Lana wasn’t less sold on two heavy black leather chairs, saying they reminded her of a “manly bachelor pad”.
Overall, however, the judges felt that a “phenomenal” living space had been created.
“In terms of adding value, creating that space and creating a proper living room that leads out to the garden, it’s a game changer for this house and I think from what we’ve seen to what this house is worth now, you’re looking at double added value in terms of what these guys have done.”
“I think the family is going to be so excited,” Lana added.
“I don’t know how six people lived in that house,” Simon said.
“They won’t understand themselves now.”
The other room Hannah and Johnny had to renovate was 18-year-old music lover Bennett’s room.
It had all the essentials – a bed, a desk – but where was the rock star personality?
Again, all the judges were in awe of the changes the couple made, with Simon declaring it was an ‘epic’ transformation and definitely had a ‘wow factor’.
The only styling issue they had was with an airplane-style drink holder attached to the wall, which Simon described as “just weird.”
So where were Hannah and Johnny at the end of the night when each renovator’s efforts were tallied?
They are sitting pretty in third place with 23.5 points – behind Taeler and Elle (24.5) and Rhys and Liam (26).
They are followed by Jacinta and Jordan (23 points), Lara and Peter (22.5), and Brad and Mel themselves (20).
