Ex NRL player Arana Taumata sprung into action to save a young woman in distress.

Taumata was out for a midday jog on Brisbane’s Mount Coot-Tha trail on Friday afternoon when he saw a woman in her 30s on the ground.

He quickly rushed to the woman to find out what happened.

“She was on the ground, just dazed. And I was like, “S***, are you okay?” I thought she slipped,” Taumata said.

“She was saying, ‘No, somebody pushed me, somebody’s pulling me to the ground, somebody’s pulling me to the ground.’

The woman, aged in her 30s, confronted a man dressed in black, who knocked her to the ground and pinned her down.

“I’m in hunting mode now. Where is that dog? Where is he?!” Taumata said in a self-recorded video while still on the track.

Speaking to 7NEWS after the incident, Taumata said the perpetrator could not be seen.

“She said the guy ran towards me, which I thought was quite strange because I was about to see him. I thought he was going to hide in the bush,” Taumata said.

“For me it was just instinct. You will help someone if they are on the ground.

Colleagues walking the aisles were alarmed that such an attack could even happen.

“I think it would be absolutely terrifying; it would be quite frightening, shocking,” one told 7NEWS.

Another added: “You should be able to walk through these areas and feel comfortable and safe.”

The woman has minor injuries.

A police spokesman said no arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon and inquiries were ongoing.

At this stage, police are not linking the attack to reports of a man attempting to sexually assault another woman on another Mount Coot-Tha hiking trail last month.

Labor MP Jonty Bush said the focus should be more on stopping perpetrators than reporting vulnerable women.

“We need to be more comfortable having uncomfortable conversations with people about their attitudes and approaches to women,” Bush told 7NEWS.

Taumata had spells with Canterbury, North Queensland and Penrith in 2008, 2010 and 2012 respectively.

He also had a stint with Melbourne in 2009 but failed to play a first-class game.

The New Zealand native made 14 appearances during his time with the three clubs.
