Has there been a purge of the leftwing of the Labour party? – podcast | News

[ad_1]

It’s been a hot week for Labour. As early as April 2023, Diane Abbott, the first black woman elected to the UK Parliament, was suspended from the party for anti-Semitism. Over the past few days, the furore over whether or not she will be reinstated and whether or not she will be allowed to run for re-election has reached a boiling point.

At the same time Feiza Shaheen, who had already started campaigning in Chingford and Woodford Green, was told she had been cancelled. She said she apologized for liking a tweet that played up an anti-Semitic trope and believed she had done so in error, but was told her application had been blocked. Helen Peed hears how the two are far from the only left-wing MPs worried about their political future.

Aleta Adu was on the campaign trail with Keir Starmer in Bury, Greater Manchester, to hear how he deals with claims he is trying to purge left-wing candidates. Aditya Chakraborty explains how some of Starmer’s allies have had more success in their bids to be candidates.
