Human remains found in The Blue Mountains have been identified as those of a tourist who disappeared 23 years ago.
Kelly Ann Carmichael, a 24-year-old woman from Geelong, was last seen by staff at a hostel in Katoomba, west of Sydney, in April 2001.
During an unrelated police operation on April 30 this year, police found human remains in bushland near Katoomba.
After an investigation, police returned to the same location on May 27 and found other remains.
They have now been officially identified as Carmichael’s.
Her family has been notified.
An investigation by the NSW Police Unsolved Homicide Team is ongoing and a Coroner’s Brief will be prepared.
