I love the look of matt lipstick, but hate that drying effect. What can I do? | Makeup

This is a problem I know well. If I wear a glossy or satin lipstick, it ends up all over my face, on the walls, passers-by… but the dry, dead effect of matte lipstick is not nice either.
First, let’s talk lip prep. It’s worth scrubbing your lips with a face cloth and petroleum jelly or a lip scrub to remove dry patches of skin and create a smooth base. Then apply a lip balm that absorbs quickly and is also matte. (I like it MAC Prep and Prime Lip.)
Then choose the formula that works for you. It’s my favorite liquid lipstick, which is applied with a stick, then dries to a matte finish that stays put. It’s hard to touch up though, as you have to take it off completely, then reapply, and no matter what brand you choose, it will dry out a bit (although the prep step helps a bit). The lip creams are also worth it. They come in a tube like a liquid lipstick, but with a more moisturizing finish (Anastasia Beverly Hills and NYX has great options).
If you prefer the finish of a traditional bullet lipstick, L’Oréal Paris Color Riche Intense Volume Matte it has great nude shades with a creamy yet matte finish. For dark and bright shades, two stand out: Rouge Dior, applies like a regular matte lipstick, but with incredible durability; and MAC has just renewed its Matte Lipstick collection – the formulas are impactful without being drying.
