Key events
8th over: Ireland 36-4 (Campher 5, Dockrell 0) That was the last ball of the over.
VARITKA! Ireland 36-4 (Tector c Kohli b Bumrah 2)
Magnificent bowling from Bumrah. He bounces off Harry Tector with a terrible delivery that hits the glove and then the helmet before spinning to cover. Tector, who tried to hook, was wringing his arm in pain before the catch was made. He struggled throughout, making 4 off 16 balls.
7th over: Ireland 32-3 (Tector 1, Campher 4) Curtis Kampfer bowls his first ball behind square for four, excellent shot.
VARITKA! Ireland 28-3 (Tucker b Hardik 10)
Hardik Pandya hits his fifth ball, a superb nip-back that beats Tucker’s great drive and deflects off mid-stump. India’s speeds are too good, certainly on this pitch.
6th over: Ireland 26-2 (Tucker 9, Tector 1) Apparently life hasn’t been tough enough for the Irish batsmen because here comes Jasprit Bumrah. It starts with a a girl to Tector, including a vicious delivery that rips along the outside edge.
At the end of the over, Tector, who was hit on the glove twice by Arshdeep, took some painkillers.
5th over: Ireland 26-2 (Tucker 9, Tector 1) Tector is hit twice on the glove by nasty shots from Arshdeep, who also fires four wides down the leg side. This presentation is not fit for purpose, not if that purpose is conquering the American market.
A special one 10 ball over from Arshdeep includes three more wides, an inswinger that Tector edges thickly for a single, a smooth lift that beats Tucker and finally a bad ball that Tucker flat-bats to the cover boundary.
4th over: Ireland 13-2 (Tucker 5, Tector 0) Tucker is defeated by a succession of jaffas from Siraj, who tear apart the seam. It is a very busy ground, same as for the Sri Lanka vs South Africa match and we are currently watching test cricket in colorful clothes.
Tucker considers a ramp for four, a risky but well-played shot, then plays and misses for the third time in the over. This time he was defeated by the bounce rather than the seam movement.
3rd over: Ireland 9-2 (Tucker 1, Tector 0) Ricky Ponting, commentating on the game, felt that batting would be most difficult against the new ball and that Ireland should play accordingly. It does all kinds.
VARITKA! Ireland 9-2 (Balbirnie b Arshdeep 5)
Two in the over for Arshdeep Singh! Balbirni, who was really struggling with lateral movement, plays the wrong line and is cleared. He was trying to open his face to point it at a third man, but he was nowhere near him. The shot of a man with a scrambled brain.
VARITKA! Ireland 7-1 (Sterling c Pant b Arshdeep 2)
Paul Stirling throws Arshdeep miles in the air and is well taken by Pant running back to the boundary. This is an excellent early wicket for India; on his day, Sterling can destroy any attack.
2nd over: Ireland 7-0 (Balbirnie 5, Stirling 2) Mohammad Siraj’s first over is even livelier. Balbirnie is beaten by three successive deliveries, the last of which bursts from a length and is brilliantly stopped by Rishabh Pant. Balbirnie gets a boundary as Siraj drifts on the pads.
1st over: Ireland 3-0 (Balbirnie 1, Stirling 2) Sterling walks down the track to clip his first ball through the covers for … two. That would be a four on most grounds.
There is some swing to Arshdeep who beats Stirling with a ball that is kept a little low. Sterling’s second and third attempts to walk the track were less successful; Arshdeep squeezes him for a spot with one delivery and then zips a batsman past his leg. A really good start.
Here we are. Left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh will open the bowling for Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling.
It’s cloudy in New York and there are a few patches of green on the fieldso this looks like a really good toss for India to win – especially since they have four players including Hardik Pandya.
The teams
India missed Yashaswi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal. This means that Virat Kohli will start with Rohit Sharma.
No surprise from Ireland.
India Rohit (c), Kohli, Suryakumar, Dube, Pant
