Assange’s Australian and British lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, followed him in a speech outside court.
“This prosecution sets a dangerous precedent that should worry journalists everywhere,” she said.
She thanked Assange’s supporters for the years-long legal battle and thanked senior Australian government figures such as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong for their efforts.
“Today is a historic day,” she said.
“This brings forward 14 years of legal battles and finally after 14 years of legal battles Julian Assange can go home a free man.”
She said prosecution was the biggest threat to the US First Amendment in the 21st century.
