Eric ten Haag stated afterwards Manchester United won 3-2 against Newcastle that Bruno Fernandes “absolutely” wants to stay after the captain hinted he was unsure of the club’s desire to keep him, while Eddie Howe felt his side had been denied a “hard wall penalty”.
In an interview on the pitch after the win, Fernandez said: “I’ll be here as long as – the club has to want me. I feel that the club wants me to be part of the future. As I’ve always said, I don’t want to be a player the club doesn’t want to have. If for some reason the club doesn’t want me, I will go.”
Ten Hag was asked about the comments. “No, absolutely the club wants to keep Bruno,” he said. The manager was pressed as to why Fernandes appeared to think United were ambivalent about their desire to keep him. “Maybe I should see the interview [it’s] your interpretation but everything i know from him he loves Manchester United, Manchester United fans and to play for Manchester United. He always gives his best and is an example, even with [his] injuries,” he said.
“Bruno loves football and wants to win. That’s how I would describe his character. I am very pleased with his performance. It’s not easy when so many players are injured around him and he has to carry the team. It maintains a good and even high level, especially in the spring when it grows to a brilliant level.”
The hosts scored through Kobi Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hoylund, while the visitors responded with an equalizer from Anthony Gordon and Louis Hall in stoppage time. At 1-0 in the 35th minute, Gordon went down in the penalty area after Sofyan Amrabat dragged a boot on his ankle. Robert Jones did not award a penalty and the video assistant referee did not direct it to the screen.
Howe said: “I was surprised because I was looking back at it and trying to understand why Anthony went down – it’s a penalty that’s flawless.” The incident happened on Wolves’ day moved to have a vote by all Premier League clubs to abolish VAR. Howe said: “I’m the same as I’ve always been – I like the power to be with the referee.”
Gordon said: “I knew straight away [it was a penalty], so I didn’t appeal. I waited for the VAR to check. I told my teammates that the penalty was clean. I don’t understand its meaning [VAR]either get rid of it or get better, it’s that simple.”
Before the match, Marcus Rashford was involved in a verbal confrontation with one or more persons in the crowd in the corner of the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand next to the tunnel. After walking towards the area and exchanging words, he came back and was calmed down by Antony and Christian Eriksen.
