In a new interview with people the actress said that because of “the way my marriage was,” she felt it was “not fair to bring a child into this world.”
She said her husband had always wanted children, but she never felt the time was right.
“There are things in life that may sound like good ideas but aren’t,” she said.
“I was already a mother,” she added, referring to her now 32-year-old son Manolo from her first marriage to Joe Gonzalez.
“I know what it means to be a good mother or to try to be the best mother you can, and it takes a lot of sacrifice, it takes a lot of energy.
“I totally respect where someone wants to be a mother after 50.
“I didn’t think that because of my career, the way I live my life, the way my marriage was, that it was fair to bring a child into this world and not be able to give 100 percent.”
Vergara admitted that part of the reason for their split was the fact that Manganiello wanted children, but she didn’t.
She said she has a great relationship with her son and that’s enough for her.
“It’s great that I had him young because now I’m going to be 52 and he’s 32,” she said.
“I wish I was older sometimes because I would have been more mature, more prepared to be a mother, but that’s what I got and that’s what happened.
“So I just kept going and tried not to look back on it because it is what it is.
“But it’s fun because I grew up with my son.”
Vergara was not yet 20 years old when she gave birth to Manolo.
“It happened to me very, very young,” she said.
“I wasn’t even 20 years old, so I don’t even remember that much of my life without being a mother.
“(Motherhood) changes you and it’s very rewarding, but it also gives you a lot of headaches.”
Vergara and Manganiello announced that they are retiring in July 2023.
“We have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the couple said in a statement to Page Six.
“As two people who love and care for each other very much, we politely ask for your privacy at this time as we move through this new phase of our lives.”
A source told the publication: “Sofia and Joe have been separated for some time and are moving away from each other to consider their future.”
Vergara was 18 when she married her first husband, high school sweetheart Joe Gonzalez.
Manolo was born in Colombia in September 1991, but the couple divorced two years later, in 1995.
Vergara and American actor Nick Loeb got engaged in 2012 after two years of dating, but in May 2014, Vergara announced that the engagement was off.
