NRL referee forced to halt Roosters-Bulldogs match after finding phone on the field

The homeless iPhone is forced NRL referee Grant Atkins to briefly stop play between Sydney Roosters and Canterbury Bulldogs.

During the first half, a pitch invader invaded the pitch at the Industry Group Stadium.

The woman ran straight past the play, causing it to stop while security dealt with her.

But the drama didn’t end there.

Shortly after play resumed, Atkins paused the game again when he found a phone possibly belonging to the intruder.

“We have a whistle, there is also a telephone. An iPhone on the field and you can only guess where that came from,” Warren Smith said in a comment.

Michael Ennis then added: “The lady who decided to do the 100m sprint dropped her phone.”

Roosters halfback Sam Walker masterminded a 26-8 defeat of the Bulldogs that ensured his side finished the weekend in the top four for the first time since March.

Fetalaiga Pauga was sent off for an ugly high tackle on Bulldogs full-back Connor Treacy in the final eight minutes and the Roosters were then reduced to 11 men after Walker drew a professional foul.

But the Roosters’ lead never looked under threat, the side confirming victory at a rain-soaked Central Coast Stadium even without their four State of Origin representatives.

Despite the breakthrough play of former rugby sevens star Jeral Skelton, the Bulldogs struggled for consistent opportunities, in no small part due to their poor ball handling in the wet.

In the first 75 minutes of Saturday night’s game, Canterbury enjoyed just two tackles from the Roosters’ 20.

But the Tricolors had no shortage of opportunities, Walker setting up all four tries.

In the first half, he threw the final pass to Dom Young, who helped Easts score their first try from the scrimmage, before slotting a shot across the line for Nat Butcher.

When Skelton spilled the ball during the first set after half-time, the visitors were in a position to extend their lead when Walker kicked to Terrell May – a huge 213m.

Looking to bounce back from his omission from the NSW side for Origin II, Canterbury’s Matt Burton was a bit player after being moved to center as a replacement for the injured Bronson Xeri.

He missed a shot at Joey Manu which allowed the Roosters to go ahead for their fourth try, scored by Blake Steep after another accurate pass from Walker in the last 15 minutes.

Suspended for last week’s game as he missed the Roosters’ mid-season review, Brandon Smith kicked a crisp 40/20 that put his side in position for a second try and a 14-4 half-time lead.

Prostitute was kept busy at dummy half, running 77 meters in the first half before his minutes were cut in the second 40.

In his first NRL game of the year, Bulldogs winger Skelton produced a tackle-of-the-year contender, stepping in to completely obliterate a sore and sorry Pauga in the first half.

He had a hand in both of the Dogs’ tries, first breaking away to set up Jaeman Salmon on the right edge and then running in for an effort from the length of the field.

Pauga looks certain to spend some time suspended for the hit that ended Tracy’s night and could join the charge sheet from Walker, who hit Jacob Kiraz with a much softer high kick early on.
