Wellfive years ago, after Victor Rey followed his teenage dreams to London, he would head into the city center from his two-bedroom flat in Camden, find a busy place like Oxford Street by lunchtime and do what he did at home in Newcastle. Which it was: set up a battery-powered amp in the street to play a backing track or guitar, then sing big soulful ballads for two, three hours, hitting every high note until he could barely speak. Like his years in wedding bands covering everything from Whitney to the Wheaties, Busking honed his traffic-stopping vocals and taught him how to command the stage and connect with the crowd.
Now 24, Ray writes and sings his own songs, incl Comfortable, Hollow and the shredding of the guitar It’s just worth everything. Classic soul, blues and rock filtered through the testing spirit of the 2020s, powered by a muscular yet vulnerable voice that aches from a broken heart. He’s great at telling stories ripped from the pages of his life through song and, like his friend Miles Smith, he’s proving there’s a place for young black British talent making authentic, mainstream non-rap music. It follows its first two self-examined EPs, I It was and I I felt, with I I tried, and fourth later this year for his experience as a busker. Now Raye has raised the bar with his ambitious productions and orchestration, artists like Victor Ray are rising to the challenge.
