Peter Dutton takes slim lead as preferred prime minister

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has a narrow lead over Anthony Albanese as the preferred prime minister, a new poll showed today.
Dutton has the support of 36 percent of voters, compared to 35 percent for Prime Minister Albanese, according to the Resolve Political Monitor survey for Nine Newspapers.
Despite the narrow margin, it is the first time the opposition leader has been favored since the survey began.
Labour’s core vote also fell to 28 per cent, with the coalition holding steady at 36 per cent, the survey revealed.
Voters put the Coalition ahead of Labor on two key national issues, according to the survey.
It shows 40 percent of voters now rank Dutton and the coalition as best for managing the economy, with just 24 percent preferring Albanese and Labour.
On national security and defence, 42 per cent back Dutton and the coalition, while 23 per cent favor the Albanians and Labour.
The results show that Dutton’s announcement that the Coalition would abandon the government’s statutory emissions target of 43 per cent by 2030 if it takes power next year has not won the ire of voters.
The move drew fierce criticism from Labour, the Greens and independent Teal.
The Resolve Political Monitor canvassed 1,607 eligible voters last Tuesday through Saturday.
