Petrol prices set to spike over King’s birthday long weekend

The average price of diesel in Sydney is currently 190.1 cents per liter and the wholesale price is 176.3 cents per litre.
However, drivers are urged to shop around as not all petrol stations offer the same value.
An NRMA analysis showed a difference of more than 60 cents between the cheapest and most expensive unleaded petrol in Sydney.
While 36 per cent of Sydney petrol stations were selling regular unleaded petrol for 174.9 cents a liter or less today, almost as many (31 per cent) were advertising at a maximum price of 229.9 cents a litre.
This is the difference between paying $87.45 or $115 for a 50 liter tank of gas.
A map of current petrol prices in Melbourne tells a similar story for two sets of prices, with the majority below 180c a litre, but many others already pricing themselves at the cycle high of 229.9.
However, even at the bottom of the price cycle, petrol prices are no longer as competitive in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
The wholesale price of regular unleaded petrol fell to a low of 171.1 cents a liter last week, but the average price in Sydney fell to just 181 cents a liter before starting to rise.
It was a similar story in Brisbane and Melbourne, but in contrast, average prices in both Adelaide and Perth fell to 169c a litre.
“Inflationary pressures on the economy caused by high fuel prices are widely reported and, in addition, families are exposed to higher prices in our biggest cities due to a lack of competition at the bottom and top of price cycles,” NRMA said spokesman Peter Khoury.
Khoury urged vacationers to do their research before filling up their tanks this weekend.
“If you’re leaving, there’s every chance you’ll go through or to a place where gas prices are cheaper,” he said.
