Iconic Sydney Restaurant is closing its doors after 35 years in business.

Tetsuya’s, a Japanese-inspired restaurant located in Sydney’s CBD, is set to close on 31 July 2024.

“Our plans to move Tetsuya’s to a new site after it closed at the end of July unfortunately did not materialize and I have made the very difficult decision to close the restaurant for good,” Founder and Chef Tetsuya Wakuda announced on Instagram of the restaurant.

“We’ve spent the last 18 months planning the move and the new restaurant, so it wasn’t an easy decision, but sometimes things just don’t go to plan.”

Wakuda renovated the popular restaurant, located on a heritage-listed site, with decor inspired by traditional Japanese cuisine, and the eponymous restaurant has become a global food brand.

The chef arrived as a tourist in Sydney in 1982, then opened Tetsuya’s in 1989 in Roselle, in Sydney’s Inner West.

It moved to the restaurant’s current CBD home in a heritage-listed building on Kent St in 2000.

Fans of the restaurant took to social media to share their disappointment at the news of the closure.

“Thanks for all these amazing experiences,” said one person.

“We will miss him!” added another.

“So sad … I’ve been lucky enough to visit five times … the food and service is outstanding,” said a third.
