After having a gruesome injury history, Smith had a fairytale run in 2016 when his knee held up and he played 13 straight games to power the Bulldogs’ drought-breaking premiership.
Smith then managed just eight AFL games before retiring in 2018. But the 31-year-old has since embarked on a boxing journey.
He has already won two professional fights and is now preparing to face Jamie Phillips in a match on Premier Boxing (watch it live and free on 7plus) on June 19.
Phillips describes himself as “humble in defeat, but always ready for war.”
But Smith revealed to former team-mate Adam Cooney on Armchair Experts that he doesn’t know much about his next opponent.
“I’ve seen it … it’s got some stickers on it, too,” Smith said.
The card will also feature other former AFL stars such as Stephen Baker (St Kilda) and Brodie Holland (Fremantle and Collinggood).
But Smith has a current AFL superstar on his mind who is seen by many Bulldogs fans as a villain.
The Western Bulldogs and GWS Giants have a bitter rivalry and Giants captain Toby Green has been at the center of several controversial incidents.
Green was suspended for two weeks for hitting Caleb Daniel in 2017, and in 2019 Green pleaded guilty to a serious conduct offense for an incident with Dogs champion Marcus Bontempelli (Green, however, was cleared of eye gouging in that incident).
There is no love lost between Green and the Bulldogs, and Smith also recalls an infamous incident in 2017 when Green grabbed and squeezed his face.
Cooney asked Smith if there were any other AFL players he would like to step into the ring with.
And Smith was quick to respond.
“Oh look, I wouldn’t mind trying Toby Green,” Smith said.
“We had some runs on the field, but look, he’s a ripper. It kind of plays the game in the same vein with a bit of competition.
“There’s that picture of him grabbing my jaw and squeezing me.
“So I don’t mind landing one on his chin.”
Going back to the upcoming fight with Phillips, Smith was asked how he thought it would go.
“Well, I’m going to knock him out,” Smith said.
Cooney replied, “Okay. Solid. I like. Good forecast. just. easy. Surely you won’t go the distance?’
“No,” said Smith.
