Queen’s Hat Stakes (2pm) preview

There was always a lively betting market on the monarch’s hat color when Queen Elizabeth II was in attendance, and Ladbrokes are betting on what color hat Camilla will wear today. Our format guide is the team at BestofBets.com who are always keeping a close eye on this new market and state: “Away from the betting circle, bookmakers continue the tradition of betting on the color of the Queen’s hat. After wearing three different shades of blue this week, punters are confident Queen Camilla will be wearing pink for the final day of royal engagement.

It’s almost that time again … the royal procession will hit the track as always at around 2pm and we can expect details of who will be in the carriages at 12pm. After being entertained to lunch by Prince Andrew (yes, you read that right, Prince Andrew) at Windsor Castle, they’ll head to the racetrack in the never-before-revealed carriages each day in Royal Ascot until 12 noon.

ITV Racing presenter Ed Chamberlin thinks the same way I do and has written in his column in today’s Daily Mail: “I will never forget that I had the opportunity, as part of our pictures, to ride in a carriage from Windsor Castle, down the long walk to reach the Golden Gates of Ascot, although we did not go through them as the Royal family. During our journey I began to think about the royal procession. It’s all part of the tradition of this meeting, the event that makes Ascot so iconic, but I couldn’t help but feel it needed a modern tweak.

“When the wagons arrived in front of the stands this week, there was a little cheering. It’s another if the Princess of Wales is involved, as her presence usually leads to excited squealing, but I’d like to see different guests invited. How amazing it would be to have Sir Alan Bates, who exposed the scandal in the Mail, in the carriage or some of the NHS heroes who have stood by us at one of the most challenging times of our lives.’

I seriously think this will be something that happens once the Prince of Wales is on the throne, but it would be adorable if Charles made the move first.

The last day, as stated in Greg’s preamble, is, wait for it again, …yet Good to Company. Which is good as bettors haven’t been fooled by the rapid changes to the racing surface. As has been the case all week, there still doesn’t seem to be much of an advantage on either side of the straight.

Good morning from Ascot on the fifth and final day of the Royals as what is expected to be the biggest crowd of the week begins to gather for a card that has something for everyone.

The Hardwicke Stakes at 3.05pm features both classic winner – Continuously – and a very lively runner in the royal colors at desert hero, on Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Bets at 3:45 p.m. and Wokingham Handicap at 17:05 are great stakes races and two and three quarter miles Queen Alex at the end of the map it’s, well, as endearingly weird as ever.

The only thing it really lacks is any real sense of drama or narrative about the races to be the best trainer and jockey at the meeting. Aidan O’Brien from the middle of day three there’s everything he couldn’t do little toe on the trainers’ prize and he could take a day off today and still finish comfortably clear thanks to those five winners already. No one else has managed more than two, and only them Carl Burke there are runners in enough races to have even a million-to-one chance of making up for the necessary foundation.

However, the jockeys’ prize also seems done and dusted James Doyle and Oisin Murphywith three wins each, are two away from the current leader, Ryan Moore. They have seven and six rides apiece on today’s card – Grand Providence, Murphy’s reserved ride in the last, was scratched – but Moore also has seven, including several likely favourites, and is far more likely to extend his lead than he expects to see it cut off.

The early weather report from Ascot on day five is very similar to the previous four: good to firm ground that was soaked overnight and a warm, dry forecast for the afternoon, albeit with an outside chance of rain at some point. The tips for today’s seven races are here – back in deficit for the week unfortunately after an empty day yesterday but only by a few quid – and the action is on with Chesham Stakes at 2:30 p.m.
