Extra security has been deployed at a Melbourne shopping center after a suspected fight and shooting outside Epping Plaza.

They all fled the scene when officers arrived, but a search of the area turned up evidence that a gun had been fired.

Police said they do not believe either group was shot.

A 22-year-old and a 16-year-old, both from Lalor, went to a nearby hospital for injuries believed to be caused by a sharp weapon.

The man is in serious condition and is under police guard.

The teenager has non-life threatening injuries and is being questioned by police.

“Police believe the two groups are known to each other,” police said.

Anyone with footage of the incident or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
