It’s a long-standing AFL tradition for players to hold hands and sing the club song after a win, but before Sydney’s players did so on Friday, they waited for a special guest to join them in their hallowed ground.
The players were visibly excited as Australian UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski quickly entered the ring and connected with veterans Jake Lloyd and Dane Rampe.
“There it is,” shouted star forward Tom Papley, before the players and Volkanovski gave a rousing rendition of “Cheers, Cheers to the Red and Whites.”
Star Channel 7 AFL commentator Brian Taylor couldn’t believe what was happening as he walked around the rooms.
“Alexander Volkanovsky in the middle of the band sings the song,” noted Taylor.
“It’s extremely unusual for someone in the middle of the band to sing the song.”
Taylor then grabbed star Brody Grundy for a quick chat as part of his Roaming Brian segment.
“You’re kind of wondering, and so am I (and) Alexander’s like, ‘what the hell is going on?'” Taylor said.
Grundy then revealed why the UFC fighter was there
“Yes, fantastic. He came during the week,” Grandy said.
“We knew it was going to be a hot race and he gave us some words of encouragement.
“He’s obviously in Wollongong and he’s talking about what it means to be in the fight and just our mindset to perform, so it’s been really good.”
Hot linebacker Isaac Heaney later added, “He came to practice and told us to toughen up … which ended up working.”
The rooms were buzzing after the win and there were plenty of famous faces soaking it all up.
“I’ve never seen so many people in the rooms. It’s absolutely amazing,” Taylor said.
Dignitaries included 1970 Brownlow medalist Peter Bedford and Swans great Michael O’Loughlin.
But Seven’s cameras also spotted another star in the room and that was famous comedian and radio sensation Dave Hughes.
The sighting of Hughes, however, shocked Seven commentators.
“He’s a member of the Carlton fan club,” James Brayshaw said.
And AFL great Luke Hodge said with a smile: “He’s a 50-year-old man in a Carlton jumper but he should have put on a jacket because he’s in the Sydney rooms.”
Brayshaw was horrified: “He’s taking selfies with Isaac Heaney. There it is.. This is a shame.
And Richmond legend Matthew Richardson asked: “What does he do? He should be there talking to the Carlton boys.
