A Sydney The P-plater received fines totaling $3,568 after being caught engaging in habitual unsafe driving.

The 18-year-old overtook another car on Campbell Hill Rd in Guildford, west of the CBD, at around 8.45pm last Friday – but several other factors made the maneuver illegal.

He was ticketed for crossing a double white line, traveling more than 45km/h over the speed limit and “overtaking when unsafe”, police said.

The road in question has a speed limit of 50 km/h, but the teenager’s Mitsubishi was traveling at 115 km/h, police said.

Speeding over 45 km/h allows the police to confiscate driver’s licenses and license plates.

The teenager’s temporary license was suspended for six months and his license plates were confiscated for three months.

But netizens online feel that the punishment did not go far enough.

“The court should impose a suspension from office for 12 months. We’ve probably all done some stupid things when we were on P-plates and after we got our full licence, but it borders on a crime,’ wrote one person.

“Until the consequences are increased, these people will not reduce their dangerous behavior,” wrote another.

The stretch of road where the 18-year-old was pulled over is notorious for speeding.

“Cumberland Highway Patrol officers will continue to actively target Campbell Hill Rd for speeding and dangerous driving offenses given the recent spate of speeding incidents on this stretch of road,” police said.
