Coco Gauff won her first Grand Slam doubles title on Sunday after the American and her playing partner Kateryna Siniakova claimed a straight set win in French Open Championship final.
Gauff and Sinjakova, who is from the Czech Republic, beat Italy’s Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani 7-6, 6-3 on Court Philippe Chatrier.
It was Gauff’s third women’s doubles final after losing championship matches at Roland Garros in 2022 and the US Open in 2021. It was a familiar situation for Siniakova, who won her eighth Grand Slam doubles title and her third at The French Open.
“Third time’s a charm. Thank you Katerina for playing with me. We decided two days before the tournament to play together,” said Gauff, who is the reigning US Open women’s singles champion. “Thanks to the fans. I know 11.30 on a Sunday morning is early for most people. It’s early for me.”
Paolini was also runner-up in the singles final at Roland Garros against four-time champion Iga Svetek on Saturday. Swiatek beat Gauff in the singles semifinals.
“The last two weeks have been very nice, very emotional,” Paolini said. “I have a lot of memories. I can’t wait to go back.”
Siniakova has had career doubles success with partner Barbora Krejcikova – including the 2018 and 2021 French Open. Errani has also had career doubles success with former partner Roberta Vinci. The Italian pair won the French Open title in 2012 – the year Errani lost the singles final.
“It’s really special to be back in this court. I don’t know how many more years I have to play. But it’s always special to play matches like this,” said the 37-year-old Errani. “It will be special to play the Olympics here, in this place. So see you in a month.”
Paolini played in her first women’s doubles final.
Errani’s serve was broken twice in the first set and Paolini stayed on the baseline to make up for it in the 11th game. The tactic worked as Errani held serve.
Gauff and Siniakova took the first set when Errani’s volley at the net went long and led 4-1 in the second set, with Paolini trailing 0-30 on her serve. The Italians fought back to make it 4-3 with a follow-up serve, but Errani’s serve was broken again and their momentum was lost
