The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) dispatched a rescue aircraft after receiving an emergency distress beacon activation at around 15:30 (AEST) from an unknown source in the north-east of the Torres Strait.
A Challenger aircraft found a 5-meter-long overturned aluminum boat with three people clinging to the hull.
It is understood that the people on board did not manage to return to the Murray Islands.
The Challenger aircraft dropped a life raft to the stranded men along with a communications kit that allowed rescuers to stay in touch during the rescue.
A fishing vessel, the Torres Express, was diverted to assist in the rescue, along with a police vessel Conroy from Thursday Island.
The Torres Express reached the vessel around 3.30am this morning and removed three people from the life raft.
All three people on board were not injured.
