Some customers of an Australian non-bank mortgage lender had their personal data accessed, including bank account information and passport number, in an alarming data breach.

Firstmac customers received an email from the Brisbane-based company telling them they had recently experienced a “cyber incident” where a third party had accessed part of its IT system.

As a result, the personal information of an unknown number of customers was stolen.

Stolen information includes addresses, phone numbers, bank account information, passport number and driver’s license details.

“As soon as we discovered the incident, we took steps to immediately secure our system. We have also engaged cyber security experts to assist us with our investigation,” said Firstmac.

He said the data breach had no impact on the company’s business operations and emphasized that its systems were secure.

“We now have robust security processes in place for any changes to account access that will require you to verify your identity through biometrics and/or two-factor authentication,” it said.

“We are committed to protecting the personal information of all our customers, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this incident may have caused you.”

In Thursday, Cyberdai.au reported the hackers behind the breach had posted stolen customer information on their data leak site after Firstmac failed to meet a ransom deadline.

Firstmac told the publication it was aware of the post and was “urgently investigating”.

7NEWS.com.au has contacted Firstmac for comment.
