US Women’s Open golf 2024: fourth round – live | US Open

Key events
Unforced error by leader Minjee Lee at 3. From the first cut left of the fairway, just 50 yards out, she carves her wedge into the sand to the right of the green. After this outburst, he hysterically races across the dance floor and almost ends up in a bunker on the other side. The ball stops on the fringes, but it will have testing up and down to limit bogey damage.
Hinako Shibuno is the last member of the lead group to start moving backwards. A sloppy lip release from a couple of feet on 3 cost the 25-year-old from Japan a chance. But there is another player who wants to make a late game move and get involved; Arpichaya Yubol, a 22-year-old from Thailand does it US Open debut this week, opened his final round quickly with birdies at 1 and 4 and is heading into the peloton at par.
-6: M Lee (2)
-4: A Lee (2)
-3: Sasso (4), Micaj (3)
-2: Shibuno (3)
E: Jubol (4)
Another three for Wichanee Meechai, this time on 2, and things go south for the Thai outsider with double quick time. She is -3. Then in the final group to trail, Andrea Lee found herself in a deep bunker on the green of the same hole; she turns elegantly at three feet and lines up to save her money and prevent a great start. She is two away from Minjee Lee.
Charlie Hull has star quality – anyone who has seen her making an eagle on a Sunday at Walton Heath last summer will confirm this. She caused waves on social media this week for…
… which is her new tactic to quit vaping. Anyway, she’s also smoking the course today; birdies on 1, 5, 13 and 16 moved her up the rankings to +5. No major breakthrough this week, but it’s only a matter of time. More stories about smoking golfers can be found in the article below that deals with 1946 US Open winner Lloyd Mangrum, who as Hull exudes effortless composure. Hey, I don’t write the rules.
Minjee Lee starts with a birdie! She sends her approach 1 to 12 feet and walks into the putt. But it’s a sloppy three-stroke great for Andrea Lee, and in no time a three-way tie for the lead turns into a two-shot lead for the 2022 champion!
-6: M Lee (1)
-4: Michai (1), A Lee (1)
-3: Sasso (2), Shibuno (1)
2021 champion Yuka Sasso made the first move of the day at the top of the leaderboard with a birdie at 2. A 30-foot oar. Back at 1, Hinako Shibuno’s 20-foot effort stayed stubbornly out of the high side and the 2019 British Open champion settled for an opening par. Wichanee Meechai, however, does not make its own; the first shot is good, missed to four feet from long range, but she doesn’t learn from Shibuno’s putt and leaves the second high to the right.
-5: M Lee, A Lee
-4: Michai (1)
-3: Sasso (2), Shibuno (1)
Meechai rounds today with Hinako Shibuno, who is on the green in regulation. Meanwhile, back at the start, the last group makes their opening shots. Andrea Lee is looking for her first major; she swings her disk in the middle. Her namesake, Minjee Lee, has two major prizes to her credit – this title in 2022 and the Evian in 2021 – and the Australian hits long down the left of the fairway, passing Meechai’s bunker with ease. Now everyone is on course. This is included!
Wichanee Meechai knows a thing or two about jump starts. The world No. 158 is a surprise contender, which is something she has been since opening her second round on Friday afternoon with four straight birdies between 10 and 13. She has been on top ever since. But it’s not an ideal start for the 31-year-old Thai today; her pitching motor stalls near the left bunker and she is forced to stand in the bunker, grab onto the shaft and swing a waist-high baseball. Something that could go horribly wrong and ruin the round almost before it’s started… but she’s made some big saves this week and is about to make another after chipping the ball 100 yards up the fairway and putting it through on the edge of the green! It’s a stunning recovery, one that seemed unlikely, and even though she faces a long two shots for par, it’s quite a result.
There it is, then! Lancaster Country Club played hard, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a result for someone today. 2020 champion Ah Lim Kim is currently demonstrating this; The 28-year-old from South Korea started too far back today to mount a challenge, but if she could sell her start to the leaders she would have earned fair coin. Birdies on 4 and 5, and she’s up to +3 in short order.
Preamble
An absurd number of big names missed out at Lancaster Country Club this week. Defending champion Alisen Corpus; another ex US Open champions Brittany Lang, Ariya Jutanugarn and Chun In-gee; other former major winners in Georgia Hall, Brooke Henderson, Jennifer Kupcho, Patti Tawatanakit and Lydia Ko; retiree Lexi Thompson, who will soon be sorely missed; and, of course, world number one Nellie Korda, who tin bought her way to a seven-bogey 10 (!) on Thursday’s treacherous par-three 12th. Lancaster Country Club plays hard and takes no prisoners.
All this, and yet there is so much cream raised to the top! Two former US Open champions are on the hunt…
… as well as another former Cinderella Big Winner …
… while home hero Andrea Lee, plus Thai underdog Wichani Michai, who has been doing all sorts of shots all week, hang in there. This could be one of the great final rounds and we’ll be kicking off at 19:00 BST. Here’s what the top of the leaderboard looked like after 54 holes, featuring the only players currently under par. It’s on!
-5: Minjee Lee, Andrea Lee, Wichanee Meechai
-3: Hinako Shibuno
-2: Yuka Sasso
