The Altona man then developed an infection that led to septic shock.

“This is a very difficult situation for our family right now,” Clayton’s father Terry Brett told 7NEWS.

What happened to the 43-year-old is a mystery.

His family only realized the construction worker was in trouble when he didn’t fly home.

They then called area hospitals.

When they learned of his condition, Terry and Clayton’s mother Jenny caught the next flight.

“The concern for us was if we didn’t get him home, we probably wouldn’t get him home,” Terry said.

Clayton arrived home Friday night – the price for that is frightening.

Medevac flight alone was $145,000.

“We looked into the financial side of it for Medevac with the help of friends,” Terry said.

Including medical expenses, the total is up to more than $200,000.

Clayton is now in the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, but his family remain extremely concerned about his condition.

He remains in an induced coma and can stay that way for weeks.

A GoFundMe campaign has so far raised just over $20,000 for the family.

“Any person who goes abroad and doesn’t have travel insurance is stupid,” Terry said.
